Burning Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD Fails

Asked by coreleonex

I have downloaded the Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD .iso file. I proceed to burn a CD from the .iso file (using Magic
ISO) and it fails everytime with a message stating "The burning process has failed, this CD may not be usable anymore".

Obviously I have tried different CDs and even a DVD but the same keeps happening. I have also tried extracting the contects of the .iso file into a folder and burning that staight onto CD, same error occurs.

I am running Windows XP Professional Build 2600 as my current OS and here is my hardware:

Packard Bell Easy Note L4
Intel Celron 1.6GHz
760MB RAM
50GB HDD

Can anyone recommend any steps I could take to trouble shoot further?

I appriciate any help.

Here a good howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

If you are installing Ubuntu on a already installed Windows...
Here a video http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/Installing_Ubuntu_with_Windows_Dual-Boot

If something go wrong you can put some boot options,
some Acer Travelmate wants "noapic" kernel boot parameters
you can find the boot options howto here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

If you have any issue this q&a will help you

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply marcorba.

Unfortunately the exact same problem occurs using the recommended burning application. I suspect it is a problem with my machine writing bootable CDs as have tried burning a Fedora bootable CD and the same thing happens.

I am going to try it from another machine as it will be quicker than finding a resolution.

If anyone else has come across this, do let me know.

I have tried burning the CD at a lower speed and still no luck.

Can ou explain to me what the MD5 sums are about? I can see it is a form of encryption but i do not know how to check if mine is correct.

What do I need to do to check it?

Thanks.

With an md5 sum you can compare the contents of files. If your .iso file is defect (this can happen when you download it), it's md5sum would be different than that one on the Ubuntu server.

To calculate the md5sum of your image file, you can use a command line tool like http://www.md5summer.org/download.html for Windows (on Ubuntu it's the 'md5sum' command). Then compare the calculated value with the ones in this list http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/MD5SUMS.
So if you have the ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso, the calculated value should be d2334dbba7313e9abc8c7c072d2af09c.

If the file has a different md5sum than expected, I would recommend to download that iso again.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice Andreas.

My md5sum is exactly the same as the one on the Ubuntu website. I really do think it is a problem with my machine so i think i will have to use another to burn the CD.

It turns out my burner is damaged/needs cleaning because I successfully used my machine at work to burn the CD.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Successfully downloaded .iso files for Ubuntu 8.04LTS and Xubuntu 8.04LTS. Trying to get XP/Express Burn (burnHowTo tips link goes to this now, BTW) to write live cd files on IBM T30 Thinkpad CD. Thinkpad reads/writes audio and other CDs and DVDs OK. All EXPRESS BURN options output iso image only. *.iso image will not boot from CD, so somehow I need to make a live CD from either image, to use with WUBI for tryout, or copy to disk ala tftp download.

1) Please confirm basic files I should have on live CD for windows. More than just the iso, right?

2) Am I missing something on Express Burn? Tried several options.

3) Can WUBI be run with live files from HD folder instead of CD as workaround? If so, what windoze utility can I use to unpack the iso image(s)?

tks
