Ubuntu 7.10 installation cannot see external hard drive.

Asked by Jim Edwards

Computer with transferred fixed hard drive cannot see my USB external hard drive where all data was backed up to with previous machine. External hard drive was originally configured as FAT32 when I still had windows XP installed (Only Ubuntu now). Previous machine which donated the fixed hard drive worked fine with this External hard drive. Any suggestions?

Hello,
It's look like your harddrive is 'SAMSUNG HD400LD' with 40GB.
so you can try this command:
1:sudo mkdir /media/newvolume ( or name it as you want, but here I named it 'newvolume' )
2:sudo mount /dev/sdc /media/newvolume
Hope this helpfull..

Hi Naufal

Tried to install "usbmount" as requested but didn't seem to solve problem, however other synaptic packages "pmount" and "hal" were suggested as alternatives in the usbmount notes. I looked and pmount was not installed but hal was already there. pmount installed and FREECOM HDD now on desktop and files available. Fingers crossed that it stays there!

Many thanks for your assistance.

Cheers
