[VERY CRITICAL] Ubuntu: OS won't boot, how do I revert packages?

Asked by Roman Battaglia

For some reason, after restarting the computer with the new updates, my ubuntu OS won't boot. I can only acsses through a USB drive, and i can't acsess my files. I need a way to transferr all my personal files and/or fix my OS to get it working again so I don't have to delete all of my precious files. Thanks!
I have tried to fix the packages but I don't know how to use commands, I don't really know much so any help would be good. I think it may have to do with the graphical interface because I can login to a command screen via recovery mode.
I also can't even use failsafe graphics mode, it just freezes with the command line after asking for read/write permissions.

I have had the same issue. I am able to access files by selecting Ubuntu Advanced Boot Options and Selecting Recovery Mode, then selecting Safe Graphics Mode (Or whatever it is called). I duel boot on this computer and have noticed that whatever is happening effects the network card (my router shows a lowspeed connection and then no connection) I have re-installed Ubuntu twice now and once with packages update and once without. The one that left out updating worked fine until I applied the updates and rebooted. Something in this latest patch is messing up my system.

Good idea, I hadent tried that yet. Ill transfer the files so at least ill be safe. Good to know that someone else out there is having the same problem. It also affects my network card (I think). But do you know how to fix it?

Sorry, Roman... I am pretty new to desktop linux so when these problems arise I have no idea what to do: Here is a hardware list, maybe you can see if we have overlapping equipment:

System Manufacturer: Gateway
System Model: DX4300
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 810 Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
Realtek Digital Output (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Marvell Yukon 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Uh oh, actually. I can't even launch in failsafe graphics mode. That could be a problem...
hmmm, looks like we dont really have any overlapping hardware. I have a intl i7 cpu and i think diffrent stuff.

All i want is, PEOPLE PLEASE HELP!!!

Why not use your backups? If the data is important to you then you will have made a duplicate copy to another storage or different PC, right?

Okay, so I fixed it by reverting to the old save but what I would like to know is that will my computer stay at this old update now that I have reverted to it in advanced options?

I suggest you review your backup regime, it is clearly unfit for purpose. You should be able to mount your partitions in the liveCD desktop. Is this not the case?

I have my partitions mounted but I am not able to read/write any of the files from the liveUSB desktop.
