Skype Video problem on ubuntu 7.10

Asked by john

The logitech quickcam Pro 9000 webcam was recognised by Skype simply by connecting via usb. The test works well. When I call someone with a video, they receive my video but I do not recieve their video. Or I receive their video but cannot see mine. I was told on a skype forum that the webcam would work both video and microphone.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 6400, with ubuntu 7.10 as the only OS.

John,

It's good to hear that your webcam is working out of the box. Yes Skype should work with both video and audio. The problem is that is it Proprietary software, and is currently in Beta testing. This question would be best directed towards Skype, but I have heard of random issues like this before.

As your webcam is working properly it does not seem like a configuration problem, it has to be an issue with the Skype program, or their network.

The best is to contact Skype, and let them gather information from you so that they can fix their software.

Best Regards,
Williamts99

Thank you for this. For information Skype 2 Beta was installed with the update manager. I am awaiting a reply from Skype on this issue. IN the meantime I found some information on the Ubuntu Forums website and updated the uvc driver. That seems to help, so that I can now see someone and I can be seen. However it is a little sensitive if I try to make too many adjustments.

On the basis of this, we could say problem solved. Thanks - the support from team is very encouraging and helpful.

I really want to like Linux & Ubuntu, but there are too many probs... but I won't go on about them.

The latest prob is that my microphone won't work under Skype. I should contact Skype, sure, but I never know whether my efforts will result in a fix, so I tend not to bother, and I go back to MSWindows or MacOSX.

Here's what I just wrote to a friend, minutes ago, about Linux &/or Ubuntu:

Hi, I'm back after 45mins or so. It's a good thing you weren't online because my microphone isn't working; well it's not working on a LinuxUbuntu platform. Ubuntu is turning out to be not as good as the enthususiats say it is. It crashes too often, which makes it hard to believe it's based on "Debian" which I believe can go a whole year without tripping. *NB All I say here is true of a MacBook; maybe Ubuntu is great on PC hardware. Ubuntu also slows down a lot on my system, so much so that I have to reboot. And then, all the same apps regenerate on re-boot, so I have to close them all down ... this just isn't what I perceived a Linux distro to be, especially not on a quite reasonably powered machine (2.16Ghz dual core, 1GB memory). I was told Linux is famous for running well on OLD hardware. I think LinuxUbuntu has become the new MSWindows. (Wait till I post these thoughts on a Linux forum; the Linux devotees are going to blow their tops!!!)
