Microphone won't work in Edgy

I've been trying desperatly for some time to get my mic working. I can play sound no problem, I just can't record, that is I can't use skype.

The volume control gui says the volume is on max, but running alsamixer in console it's turned off, and I can't get it up. Hitting space markes the mic as "capture" but the arrow keys won't bring the volume up. Hitting "m" doesn't work either.

I've been looking at other posts, and tried some fixes, like the: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Edgy#How_to_configure_sound_to_work_properly_in_GNOME
But I can't seem to find a solution. Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Though I've been using ubuntu for a year I'm still mainly dependent on gui, so please tell me what more I should include in the post.

By the way: When I try recording in sound recorder it just hangs up.

Using "oss" instead of "alsa" as the sound device has given me sound from the mic :)

The sound is really bad though. A lot of background noise. And skype won't accept my sounddevice settings. So I'm still in need of help.

background noise could be a result of mic-boost. Try without mic-boost, but mic input could be too quiet then.

Mic-boost is off, I've also toggled the other volumes but can't get a clean sound. The most frustrating part though is skype not accepting my sound device at all.
