Mutiple swap partitons

Asked by John Belton

I have several swap partitons, some 2GiB others 4GiB after upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04LTS, I think the extra ones are just wasting disk space. I think I can reduce these to one 8GiB partition and add the other space to the Ubuntu partiton but I'm not sure how.
The PC has 4GiB of RAM which should only need the "recomended" twice the size of the system RAM.

I'm not sure why these extra partitions were generated but it seems each upgrade generates a new swap partition from the Ubuntu partiton leaving the other old ones and reducing the hard drive space.

With 4Gb RAM you need 4.4Gb swap. You can use live CD or USB to resize the swap or data partitions to how you need.

Thanks for the help, I thought I should be able to do it with the live DVD but wasn't sure how, there was a Community article dealing with it that I remember seeing but I'm not sure if it is still valid as it was written for Ubuntu 10.04 installation. I will look into it further but if you know of a reference for something later I would appreciate it, thanks again

I tried with an old CD (Ubuntu 9.10) and trying it the only option available is to create a new partition table which will erase all data! the one thing I didn't want to do. The orignal Windows Vista product key is unreadable and I don't want to pay for another key that will hardly get used.
I don't seem to be able to find Gparted on the current DVD I madewhen Ubuntu 14.04 was released. I may be looking in the wrong places.

I have reinstalled Ubuntu on a new laptop hard drive and archived the old one for the sake of retaining the the option of making use of the Windows Vista installation that I don't have any current use for. I don't think it will be used and may well get wiped in the future as I can't forsee any future need for Vista. The chances of my needing to go backwards to something that bad are low and the only reason it wasn't deleted years ago was because some old Open University software only worked under Windows (even Apple users had to use some additional software to use it), current courses generally have Android options.
I will investigate why gparted couldn't unmount the surplus swap partitions even from a Live Installation CD that was running but think this problem has been "sort of" solved but any suggestions as to why might clear things up.
