ubuntu 12.04 opening in gnome classic has no gui

Installed ubuntu 12.04 to recover lost system after update to 14.04.
Had everything set up nicely and started playing with personal preferences.
First : I added compiz to unity and tried adjusting the view of my windows. Was not pleased with the outcome.
After reading some articles, I decided I wanted to switch to the Gnome Classic desktop. I installed all of the components I could locate and installed them through the package manager.
Upon re-boot I always ended up in the unity enviornment. Then I learned you could choose the desktop from the password login.
When I do that, I have the problem I described.
I do remember that when I was installing one of the gnome programs I was offered a dialog box that had two options, I chose the one that was pre selected. I'm sure that this was the problem, but dummy me I don't remember enough of the details.

Problem solved.

Had this set up on an HP laptop with a HDMI hookup to a monitor. I did not realize that it was not mirroring to the monitor. This setting must have been reset when I went to Classic Gnome. I have corrected the problem. Sorry for the disruption and thank you to all those who helped.
