If you boot to liveUSB / CD desktop, you can make an image of the drive, you can then use this to revert back in the live CD using the image as input.

Is this what you mean?

I would advise you two methods:

1 - Clonezilla ( http://clonezilla.org/). It's a partition and disk imaging/cloning program. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore.

2 - Use Remastersys (http://www.remastersys.com/) manual method.
Check https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch.
It will give you an idea about a manual method to do the same. However those page are a bit too old and aren't updated for the current Ubuntu version.

Can you help with this problem?
