Atheros AR9462 wifi intermittent slowdowns and cuts

Asked by this

Hi,

My wifi adapter Atheros Qualcomm AR9462 has been having problems, dropping the connection from time to time and being generally very slow both latency-wise and bandwidth-wise.

Ubuntu is installed on hard drive, PC is an Acer VN7-591G, trying to connect to a home router (on which I tried disabling wifi n but did not help). It seems like lots of packets are being dropped. I have tried the nohwcrypt=1 option for the ath9k driver but no success. It runs fine on Windows on the same wireless network.

Here's a plot of the download speed + wifi bandwidth used when it runs extremely slowly : http://i.imgur.com/NAlyk3t.png
And the same plot when it runs slightly faster but still acts very slow : http://i.imgur.com/lSd9I9r.png

In both cases, running iwconfig gives following ranges of the following values :
Tx excessive retries:5-2000 Invalid misc:50-500

Here is the full dump of the diagnostics :

I suspect that your wireless adapter is experiencing the following bug, for which there is no solution yet:

Run the below and reboot:

echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9kfix.conf > /dev/null

Is it better?

Unfortunately the nohwcrypt option does not help.

From all the information that I have read, it seems like there is no easy fix to this. I'm willing to delve into the driver code a bit so as to diagnose the problem if anyone has any clues about where to start and what sort of problem it could possibly be.

Another thing occurred to me when I was reading through a similar bug : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/945379

The bug indeed only now that I have had Ubuntu installed for about 2 weeks or so (previously had the same issues with Linux Mint). It worked fine up to a week ago. It's as if it worked when the system is fresh, then something got full and now it's shaky.

Does iwlist scan show TKIP being used for encryption on your wifi access point?

                    IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1
                        Group Cipher : TKIP
Pairwise Ciphers (2) : CCMP TKIP
                        Authentication Suites (1) : PSK

It seems to be the case.

When I disable TKIP, it seems to be running as it should for now at least. I tried to re-enable wifi n but problems reappear if I try that.

So there seems to be a problem with both wifi n and TKIP. Does anyone know what those have in common that could cause problems?

So I can confirm that disabling TKIP gets me normal download/upload speeds and latencies. However, connecting to the network still takes a few tries, as in : connection established for half a second, disconnect, wait 10 seconds, repeat 2 or 3 times, until the connection gets established.

I think we should convert its into a bug, my installation on Dell E7440 works well for 2 years.

lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS
Release: 14.04
Codename: trusty

uname -a
Linux truclk-dell-e7440 3.13.0-62-generic #102-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 11 14:29:36 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

But now things are go crazy, the network is very slow and it's tried many times before connect to network successfully. I think it's once of upgrade problem or kernel.

Can you help with this problem?
