How do I install synaptic package manager in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS?

Asked by tadiv

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a friend's old PC today and was surprised that I could not find the package manager. Is it installed and just not in the gnome desktop menu? If not, how do I install it? If it is installed, how do I find it / use it?

Thanks,
Tom

It comes with Software Centre to search for and install new packages as well as gdebi to install debs. Yes it is installed. The OS would be pretty useless if users cannot add and remove software as they require.
Just search the Dash for "software center" (stupid American spelling) and it will load. You can also use the ALT+F2 menu to launch it as usual

So, I found the "main Menu" tool (I use the Gnome desktop - sorry, but I really hate Ubuntu One) and I found that what I'm looking for is not /usr/bin/software-center but synaptic-pkexec - I'll check her machine later to see if that is available or not...

IF synaptic-pkexec is not there, how would I install it?

Thanks,
Tom

Run following commands in a Terminal to install synaptic (package manager):

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install synaptic

You can do all you need with the installed tools. Some people like synaptic but software centre will allow you to add and remove packages as well as run updates
