system did not seem to recognize connextant external modem in USB also unable to open files on cd rom from modem

Asked by Spirit

I have recently installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my laptop. I downloaded and installed Gnome PPP and I can get the modem dialling and connected. However, the connection does not appear in my Networking screen (System -> Admin -> Network) so it looks as if the system can dial out, but isn't able to use the connection for the applications.

The connection stays up for a few seconds then drops (it's the same connection I use for Windows, so I know the modem's OK). Is there a good reason why Ubuntu can't recognise the dial up connection as a valid network connection, even though Gnome PPP is able to dial and connect?

Thanks for any help.

p.s. I'm waiting for broadband but it could be ages.

Oh, I forgot to add this, I have Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet Card which should be good with Linux but I m not sure.

When you install Ubuntu it should detect the network card because the Realtek RTL8139 is a card that Linux supports without any additional drivers.

The Iskara Calisto 821 modem has a DHCP server built in which you will need to enable. It is under the LAN tab in the web based admin tool.

Have you tried to install Ubuntu yet? Have you had any specific problems?

Try this............System-Administration-Networking- this will show configured network cards, generally eth0 is your main card.......select this with a left click and click properties, make sure -enable this connection- is ticked in the box, and for configuration select -DHCP-

Hope this helps,

Phil.

Can you type some commands and paste the results here? To type commands you need to open a terminal like this:-

Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal.

The comands are:-

lspci
ifconfig
route
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Each one produces some output that you can select with the mouse and paste into a text editor. You can then save it. You will probably then need to either copy it onto a usb device of some kind because Ubuntu probably won't be able to write to your XP partition.

Alternatively you can save the files under Ubuntu and then access them using XP and and this driver installed under XP:-

lspci should be found - it's spelled lima, sierra, papa, charlie, indigo.

However the fact that you have an eth0 is a bonus.

Your router probably has the IP address 192.168.1.1, so once you have an ipaddress you can point your browser at the router by visiting http://192.168.1.1/ - most routers will have some documentation detailing this on their website.

Can you show the result of this command (which should grab an IP address from your router).

dhclient eth0

It should try to get an IP address from your router. If your router has DHCP disabled then you can forcably give your network card an IP address like this:-

sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Then try to ping the router

ping -c 5 192.168.1.1

If that works, point your web browser at http://192.168.1.1/

Also note that you can check the configuration of the router using the above url from the windows xp partition.

In addition could you please paste the result of the following command from XP?

ipconfig /all

Can you confirm how your modem is attached to the computer? Is it attached by USB or Ethernet?

If I teal the truth I don t now, but i have checked the cables, it goes like this: There is one cable leading from modem to the Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet Card one to the electric and one in the wall to the connectin.

Look at the cable coming into your computer.

If it is ethernet then the plug looks like this:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:UTP_ethernet_cable_8pin_modular_jack_endings.jpg

If it is USB then it looks like this:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Type_A_USB_connector.jpg

If it is ethernet (which I suspect it is) then the following page details how to setup PPPoE - which is what I believe XP is using to connect to your ISP.

Ah, any line that starts "sudo" will ask for a password. It is asking for your password you used to logon to Ubuntu, not your ISP password.

As a test can you go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal and type the following

sudo whoami

It should ask for your Ubuntu password - the one you logged onto the desktop with. Type that in, press enter and let me know what it says.
