nvidia 6150le driver problem

Asked by Danny Tenhoff

I have hp A1410N desktop with AMD Athlon (TM) 64 3800+ processor, 3072mb/pc2100 memory, integrated nvidia 6150le geforce video and a hp vs17e monitor. I have tried to install 14.04.2 Ubuntu lts on the computer, I have been having a lot of trouble to getting the computer to work with the Ubuntu 14.04.2 lts. I get the freezing of the computer when I restart, I have used Ubuntu help and flowed the instructions to install the nvidia drivers. And after I do all that is said to do. By starting in recovery mode and checking for broken files, updates and the recommended nvidia files and restart the computer and then I get a message that says [0.064000] ..mp-Bios bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC and then it tries to start up and all I get is a black screen. I have been trying over a month and four re-installs to get this to work with Ubuntu. And I know that this has been a problem that has been going on for years with nvidia cards. I also know that this a repeat question that has not been answered with only one quick answer. I have been reading forums and using Ubuntu help. Can some one PLEASE HELP ME. I love using Ubuntu and have been using them since 10.10, 11.10 and them 12.04 and 13.04 and know 14.04. Thank you Danny Tenhoff

Try the boot option:

nouveau.nomodeset=1

May help

I doubt you will be supported by the proprietary video driver but the open source ones are great for the 6100 range

Thank you Actionparsnip for the Answer, but can I please get the step by step to do this. That way if it does work for me I can past it on to others that are having the same problem.

I like to use them too all else being equal, but things are not equal in this case. The only solution I found was 15.04.

I have found out, that on older computers that maybe Xubuntu 14.04 will work. I don't know yet but I am going to try it myself to see. Or I will make a Ubuntu to work with the HP that I have. I like Ubuntu!

They are both Ubuntu under the hood, the only difference is the default desktop and applications.

Thank you to all that tried to help with this, I had to use an older driver for the integrated nvidia 6150le on the hp a1410n desktop with Ubuntu 14.04.3 on it. The driver I had to use was the 173. nvidia driver that came up. I could not use the 304 nvidia drive because it would freeze up and I would get a error message and or a black screen. I did get this fixed and the HP is working get now.
