How to reinstall Feisty Fawn from my live CD

Asked by wencoe

I successfully installed Feisty Fawn from a live CD and have been setting up, etc. I installed as dual bootup to a WinME PC with 15Gb, 256mb, Celeron, 633mhz. All is acceptable to me as a newbie re speed, etc., and all was well until I was notified of update.

Was notified of update to Ubuntu 7.10, downloaded and received message not enough space in Ubuntu partition. I presume I can just function as is but updating is better, especially since my WinME is corrupted and serves no purpose. It also steals what limited space is available from 7.04. I assumed I could reinstall Feisty Fawn by using the live CD as per my initial install, use the entire HD option for Ubuntu and kill off WinME.

My BIOS is still configured to boot from CD, ahead of HD. Tried several times using the live CD but all I do is keep booting into the HD's installed 7.04 Ubuntu. Need help, please. I guess I'll have to go thru some uninstall procedure, then reinstall again from my CD, selecting entire HD as a single partition for Feisty. Please advise. I really haven't done much re settings, etc, so a complete ne install is of no concern and sounds like the easiest out for a newbie.

Thank you.

Usually, you wouldn't need to go through any uninstallation; reinstalling will just wipe out everything. You really don't get any message telling you to press a key to boot from CD?

As for reinstalling then updating, it usually works, but if you are to update it to 7.10 right away, you might as well install it directly, if you can download the CD. It's the cleanest way to update the system.

Thanks, I'll get back to you shortly after I carefully document exactly what's taking place. TIe gist of my question is my desire to remove WinME from its partition and expand 7.0.4's partition to take up the entire 15GB hard drive.

I have no problem with wiping out everything and would be happy if the Live CD reinstalled and I reconfigured per the knowledge I have already gained. I presume that if I downloaded 7.10 CD it too would not accept my limited space on this C drive; My WinME on this PC is too corrupted to use to download. Accordingly it appears to me I need my installed 7.04 to keep this PC functional.

When you say download the CD, I assume you mean image .iso file. I don't believe I can do that since my Adaptec won't permit this CD creation, however the image could be directed to my Desktop if the partition were expanded to increase 7.1.0's available.

Right now I'm not really sure I know what I'm saying or if I'm being lucid. I'm off per my first paragraph.

Ok, so what you'll want to increase the space available to your current installation is GParted. You can install it with Synaptic or with the terminal command "sudo apt-get install gparted".

It's a partitionning tool that is able to resize a partition. In this case, you can simply scrap the WinME one and resize the current one you have to fill all the space you just freed.

Please use the Ubuntu 7.10 live cd it has the Partition Editor (gparted) on it to resize ext3 partition....
If you start gparted from installed Ubuntu you cannot resize mounted partition.

Hope this helps

I got back to you too late. I tried a different tack with the Live CD by noting that, as previously, the Live Cd was bypassed upon bootup The icon on the bottom left of the sign on showed 'Options' available. So instead of logging in I pressed options and then selected the "boot from live CD" option.

Lo and behold I successfully booted from the Live CD just as I had done, way back when. I"m now in the process of going thru setup and will formally get back to your "help" assist and thank you accordingly.

This is the aspect of Linux community that was extolled by Linux Users; I'm now one of that group that glowingly endorses this "open-source" family. I'll send this as soon as I confirm that all is well with my reinstalled setup and correctly reflects my renewed status. It also reaffirmed that all 15gb are available in one (1) partion for 7.0.4.

I printed out this particular problem/solution and will retain your response for future reference and/or pass along to ther newbies. Thanks again. Hopefully,7.1.0 will now be accepted for updating, other wise I'll have to upgrade my HD or bite the bullet and update the computer.
