backup utility does not see backups to restore

Asked by tadiv

SO as you can see from https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/287022 I had all sorts of problems upgrading from 14.04. I now have a clean installation of 16.04, but when I went to the backup utilities to restore my backup (I did a backup just before trying the failed upgrade) I'm told by the backup utility that there are no backups (this is an external drive) to restore...

Suggestions?

OK - so, this morning I had not defined the directory on the external drive. Now that I have that figured out, when I select the "Forward" button (after restore and defining the directory) I get an error message that states:

Error creating directory: Permission denied

I don't quite understand that... Any suggestions?
