How do I get nautilus to default to details

Asked by tadiv

When I open nautilus (either via a terminal window or via the "Places" menu) it displays icons - I have dug around looking for settings and can't find them - and the man page did not help - how do I get nautilus to default to line-item details instead of icons?

Thanks,
Tom

When you have a nautilus window open, go to the top menu (or top status bar if using Unity WM) and go to Edit -> Preferences. Under the Views tab, change "View new folders using:" to "List View". Also, under the "List Columns" tab, be sure that you have the appropriate details selected for what you wish to see. Hope this helps.

I'm using gnome-panel - there is no Edit menu when running nautilus...

I am not familiar with the particulars of gnome-panel, but there should be a way to get to these basic menus. Perhaps it is not being displayed because of an issue between the two. You could temporarily switch to Unity and change the preferences that way, but I am unsure of why you wouldn't be able to see the file menus.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was able to set the preferences in unity then go back to a not so horrible interface and the settings stuck!
