Ubuntu wont ping windows on a network or vice versa

Asked by Simeon Jenkins

I have a windows computer and a xubuntu computer both connected to a router. However neither computer will ping each other. if i go into the router and find the list of computers connected to it and their ip adresses and names, the name of the xubuntu one comes up as "unknown". I cant share printers or folders. Both computers can connect to the internet fine. there are no other computers on the network.
Thanks!

Hi,

Not being able to ping a computer could be a firewall problem. Do you have a firewall installed on Windows?

For Ubuntu, you can install a firestarter on ubuntu to setup your firewall correctly,

Yeh, the firewall was blocking other computers on the network. I changed the settings to allow my IP adress in.
