I am installing Ubuntu-8.40-rc

Asked by Scott

I have an HP Media Center desktop PC with a 500 gig hard drive a 10 gig boot drive and a 300 gig personal media drive.
It has a dual core 2, 2.4 gig CPU with 4 gigs of memory. I have a Vista Ultimate O S. I down loaded the new Ubuntu desktop 8.40 as well as the Ubuntu alternate 8.40. I have never used a Linux product. I would like to keep the Vista OS and install the Ubuntu O S as well. I would like to know the proper step by step procedure to install The Ubuntu O S so I could use one/or both of the systems. Is it possible to do this without going out and buying a 2 gig flash drive and down loading to it. I do not have partitioning software as I thought it was on the Ubuntu download disc. Thanks a lot for any help I can get. P. S. I keep running into snags when I try to install.

Hi, you should have about 7GB of free space (without partitioning), then use Manual option, create two patitions (swap, /) in the free space, first choose 1GB in size and swap in filesystem; then choose the rest of the space for the/ partition, choose ext3 like filesystem and '/' like mount point. If you don't have free space, use tools llike gparted to resize your ntfs partitions. This is the basic installation, if you want to install more programs in ubuntu, give '/' partition 10GB at least. With this process you don't loose Vista, the GRUB (boot tool) will recognize Win by default. Welcome to Linux World....enjoy it, it's a great O.S. Greetings from Colombia
