Cannot connect to Archive.Ubuntu.Com

Asked by logrusmage

So, my desktop, which runs Gutsy, cannot update. I get the following error.
Could not download all repository indexes
The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

My brand new laptop, which cannot connect to the internet wirelessly because I cannot install new packages, has the EXACT same problem. I will soon try bringing my laptop to my fathers house, and seeing if this is a local problem, but I''d still like to get it fixed.

It was working just fine a few days ago.

Help?

I believe this is relative to everyone trying to connect to the server at the same time. I too am getting this error, with en_CA. Wait a few days until everything cools down, and theres more available server space.

same issue when i try to install apps

jza873@CHAOS:~$ sudo apt-get install kaffeine-mozilla
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  pwgen liblzo1 libqt3-mt-mysql libfame-0.9 libpvm3 libmyth-0.21-0 transcode
  ntp libmyth-perl libnet-upnp-perl
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  kaffeine-mozilla
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 26.1kB of archives.
After this operation, 139kB of additional disk space will be used.
0% [Connecting to us.archive.ubuntu.com (91.189.88.31)]

it just hangs at 0%. i was guessing it was a server load issue because everyone is upgrading and installing new apps.

It may be an issue related to the huge network traffic caused by the just released Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
I think a lot of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS or Ubuntu 7.10 pcs are trying to do network release upgrade.

Hope this helps

sudo apt-get update --fix-missing
took about 3 mins
then just ran: sudo apt-get install kaffeine-mozilla
BAM just like normal

Thanks. I kinda figured that, I was only worried because no one else seemed
to have the same problem immediately. Thanks still :P.
