ubuntu610 amd64 ati and radeon1300 disp adapter

the installation/xorg module correctly recognized the video card as ati1300 as well as the monitor -acer 16:10 aspect ratio; the vid card sits on pci-e slot.

however, it configured the resolution as 1200x1000 not the monitor native 1600x1000.

question, does anyone know where the xorg configuration file and any other related conf files reside in ubuntu610 to edit so that the available monitor can be used to its spec?

is there a need to also download additional packages/libs/drivers to achieve the above goal?

i'm fully aware of the complexities involved when it comes to xorg configurations; any help is welcome to make and keep this editting process as simple as feasible.

I assume you are using the propietary fglrx driver.

Have you tried to execute from a terminal, the following?

sudo aticonfig --initial

If that doesn't work and you want to manually edit the xorg.conf, (and you know what you are doing), the file is at:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

No, I did not try the suggested command yet; I wll asap. I'll keep you posted.

No, I did not install the fglrx driver from the repository as suggested in another post; why? because I noticed that 1300 card is not supported by that driver. The present situation is as configured by the ubuntu/xorg modules at installation time -no other attempts were made to modify the settings after install.

In view of that, is it still OK to start the manual command suggested?

You should install the xorg-driver-fglrx from Synaptic or apt-get

(The fglrx do work with ati x1300, what doesn't work currently is the open source radeon driver.)

Then, you should execute

sudo aticonfig --initial

to create a optimized xorg.conf file that usually defaults to the native resolution.

Mr. Rey,

Done as suggested.

however, there were 2 pkges fglrx, I installed only one, that's the one WITHOUT dev extension; just for my education, what's the one with dev ext for?.

the command was run and it appears that it reconfigured something -the file xorg.conf was updated and fglrx does exist in it.

however, a message 'unintialised files found' came down on the terminal before the mssge that it saved a back-up copy of the original to xorg.conf.original-0.

now, in view that everything appears peachy as far as I could see, is there any way of applying the change/manually (gui interface?) without a reboot?

You just have to press Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace.

That shuts down the current x session, reloads x (with the new configuration) and goes to the login screen appears.

Sorry but all I know about dev packages is that they are intended for developers.

Yes, taken.

Conclusion after, it appears that the screen is just a tad brighter, the rest is as it was; proof, when I call Screen Resolution under System Pref the rez is the same 1280x1024 as a max and some other below with no possibility to adjust it upwards to what the config says is available or what the monitor is capable of.

I'll try a full reboot and see how it reacts. I'll keep you posted.

Mr Ray, what a life after full reboot!!!!!!!!!!

It appears that the new xorg conf file synchd with the monitor and everythyng is in place and cool.

if I may, for this kind of hware reconfig a full reboot as a minimum is req'd.

thanx for your input, it sorted out one of my problems.

next is installing WINE in ubuntu; are you conversant with such endeavours? if y interested to help?
