Is Upgrading to 8.04 Worth It and Safe?

I got Ubuntu 7.10 presently, and want to know if upgrading to 8.04 is safe. I want to make sure I get no problems if i decide to upgrade to 8.04.

1) Will upgrading to 8.04 mess up the way my desktop currently looks?

2) Will it conflict with any programs, like, virtualbox, opera, etc?

3) Will I have to make major changes to my computer after upgrading?

4) What are the advantages over 7.10?

5) Is it worth it in the end?

1) No.
2) It shouldn't, but it is highly recommended that they (third party apps that are not from our repos) are removed before proceeding, as they are unsupported and untested.
3) No.
4) Latest versions of packages, supported for the next three years (as opposed to the EOL of 7.10 in 2009-04). See http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&q=hardy+heron+review for a list of reviews.
5) IMHO, yes.

ffm thanks for the reply. you mentioned that third party apps should be removed before upgrading. does this mean that virtualbox and opera are not supported and can therefore be affected as a result of upgrading? i thought that virtualbox and opera were 3rd party apps that were supported by ubuntu since they're found in synaptics. please let me know. thanks.

If they are avalible without installing any third party repositories (such as medibuntu) they should continue to work and be supported.

ffm, under Third Party Software in Repositories which is found in Synaptics, i have listed the following:

1) http://www.virtualbox.org/debian gutsy non-free

2) http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free

Since these are 3rd party software, you mentioned that there might be a problem. Will upgrading to 8.04 affect these programs in any way?

Unknown, but it is recoomended that they be temorarilly disabled and their packages removed.

Also, as always, back up your critical work before proceeding (try using pybackpack, sbackup, or a good old copy-paste.
