Upgrade backup

If I upgrade gusty to hardy will the programs that run in gusty run in it? Can I keep a backup of the downloaded upgrade so that I can install it again after reformatting?

They should continue to work, however you cannot revert to gutsy easily without reinstalling.

In the future, keeping a separate /home partition may ease reinstallation if it was needed.
