Ubuntu 8.04 Update Manager hanging

Asked by andyT

I have recently upgraded from 7.10 (done using the upgrade button in the update manager) and everything worked without issue until last week when I was prompted to install an update for Thunderbird. I launched update manager and clicked the "install updates" button. This caused update manager to grey out and stay that way (nothing else happened - no dialogs indicating downloading/installing updates). This has happened everytime I have tried it the last few days (I have rebooted and closed down completely many times).

Thanks

Once more I am begging you to help me on how to form the french accents while typing. I used to get them by combining a couple key strokes such as alt 133, alt 135 etc. These functions do not work with Ubuntu. Once more can someone tell mwe how to get acces to them Please.
Sincerely yours
