Cannot install... gdm not config'ed... Ubuntu 6.06

Asked by fjgaude

Using AMD 64 X2, dual CPU, 4400+; Asus A8N-SLI mb; ViewSonic VP201s, and ATI X700 PCI-E RV410 Radeon video. Dual boot with two drives, FC6 on one drive, trying to put Ubuntu on the other.

No screen, etc.

sudo dpkg-reconfigue -phigh Xserver-xorg

It's like it finds the PCI-E board but then loads the wrong driver or doesn't continue with the load?

Help. Thanks.

Could not start gdm with:

/etc/init.d/gdm start

results in [fail]

The 'ati' driver is loaded, as far as I can tell.

Help!

Used sudo startx and could see that it used the xorg.conf to load. Checked that file and it looked to be correct from all my hardware.

The error was (EE) VESA()): Set VBE Mode failed!
fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for drover 0

Pray tell, what to try next?

Another attempt to get Ubuntu installed. Got it up in character mode, then tried again:

sudo dpkg-reconfigue -phigh Xserver-xorg

Right near the end of manually reconfiging, entering 24 for color depth got this error msg after no screens found:

XIO: fatal IO error 104 on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests .... with 0 events remaining.
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/frank/.Xauthority

No go with startx.

Now what could this mean, please?

Which version of Ubuntu did you install?
Can you pastebin the Fedora and Ubuntu xorg.conf files somewhere?

I have to figure out how to get the Ubuntu 6.06 Alternate
character-based xorg.conf install into a msg. I have a two-disk system,
each with 300 gigs. Seems that most distros have trouble with the PCI-E
ATI board and/or with the 20.1" monitor, but not all. SuSE 10.1 and 10.2
installed, as did Freespire. The live version of Mandriva 2007 (metisse)
worked, finding all my hardware and at 1600x1200 for the monitor, but I
couldn't install it onto one of the hard drives. Strange, as the install
code must be different between the two.

One of these days... <smile>

Regards,
frank

Also, just as a side note. 6.10 is the latest Ubuntu version.

Yes, I know, and I've tried to install 6.10, 7.04 herd 1 and 2, all either 32- and 64-bit. But no-go. That is why I tried 6.06 Alternate. That got me to where I am now in charater mode.

My problem is not solved, thank you. <smile>

Okay, Aron, here is the Ubuntu 6.06 xorg.conf file and so much different
from the FC 6 one (perhaps the ati driver should be radeon; do you know?):

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Okay, by changing the 'ati' to 'radeon' the machine booted in graphics mode, but at 640x480. How can I change that to 1600x1200, my monitor native resolution?

As seen from the xorg.conf: there are all these Screen, Display Modes at color depths other than the default of 24.

Please say if there is a tool, a way to change a text file to get Secrren Resolution Preferences that the monitor can handle. Thank you.

Changed the 'ati' driver to 'radeon' and all worked as it should. Seems the video board is detected correctly but the wrong driver is loaded. Xorg.org problem?

Thanks to all who offered advice.
