how to check hdd on next reboot or now

hardy heron doesnt check hdd for error on bad shutdowns ok good,but how do i enable this feature now,my hdd with ubuntu hardy on sda8 has errors,i cant check it now because it says it will damage on mounted volumes.is there a gui software for doing scan disk/checkdisk? in xp i just type chkdsk drive not in ubuntu its more confusing and dangerous too,

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo touch /forcefsck

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then reboot
