Your sound card will very probably work with pulseaudio. You shouldn't worry about this.

What you should know however is that not all application work nicely with pulse audio.
(flash and skype are know example)
Also alsa will not be removed. Your application that uses alsa will still use it. Only Alsa is then redirected to Pulseaudio (or at least it should be, there are some issue sometimes)

If you're using Ubuntu 8.04 pulseaudio is installed by default. You will only need to select it in your audio preference (system > preference > sound / "Devices" Tab)

You will probably want to install the PulseAudio Device Chooser / PulseAudio Manager / PulseAudio Volume Control.
You'll find all of those in "Add / Remove Application"

Can you help with this problem?
