Install not working...

Asked by Robert K. Tompsett

Ok, I down loaded, and burned a copy of Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). The files on my disk are as listed;

.disk,
casper,
dists,
install,
isolinux,
pics, pool,
preseed,
autorun.inf,
md5sum.txt,
README.dll,
ubuntu

According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/bootfromCD, my burn is missing;
bin,
dsctree,
programs,
cdrcmupgrade,
start.bmp,
start.exe,
ubuntu.ico

When the disk boots from the CD, the start menu comes up asking for my input to Install, Check the disk, or View on MS Windows XP. The program continues into a alpha-numeric scroll for hours without preforming anything beyond. What am I doing wrong?

Hello

OK use the alternate CD and try to install...

Firstly,I suggest you check out the download site http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Next,Choose a location near you and download the ISO. Then follow the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (Burn your cd at a lower speed say at 4x and check your MD5 sums)

Bit info about MD5 sums:
With an md5 sum you can compare the contents of files. If your .iso file is defect (this can happen when you download it), it's md5sum would be different than that one on the Ubuntu server.

To calculate the md5sum of your image file, you can use a command line tool like http://www.md5summer.org/download.html for Windows (on Ubuntu it's the 'md5sum' command). Then compare the calculated value with the ones in this list http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/MD5SUMS.
So if you have the ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso, the calculated value should be 166991d61e7c79a452b604f0d25d07f9

If the file has a different md5sum than expected, I would recommend to download that iso again.

Here's more info about alternate CD version,
http://ubuntu-releases.cs.umn.edu/hardy/

You can also see screenshots of partitioning here:

Hope it helps

Robert,

Are you viewing this within Windows or are you actually booting from the CD?

The 8.04 CD will install like a Windows Application under Windows (known as Wubi).
If the machine actually boots from the CD though it will bring up a separate menu.
(may need you to change your BIOS on startup to ensure that CD is before first hard drive in boot order).

Regards

My computer is set to boot off the CD-ROM 1st, C: HD 2nd, Ubuntu is not installing correctly at this point. I downloaded from 2 different mirror sites. I tried the alternate download. I burned using Infrarecord set as ISO, at 4x, All I get is the long scroll of alpha-numeric code, with periodic "error" lines. After a period of 8+ hours the install is locked up with the scroll of alpha-numeric code. The md5sum is a bit confusing to use so I will need to wait for the ShipIt copy. I have 2 IDE HDs for a dual boot. C: is Win XP, and E: right now has SUSE 10.1. I want to replace SUSE with Ubuntu. I can't remove SUSE from the 2nd HD now because the GRUB boot loader will show an Error 22, if I do.

Robert, the only time I have seen this sort of behaviour from a CD is when it has been damaged.
It's a bit of an obvious question but have you actually used his batch of blank CD's successfully yet?
Perhaps you've got some dodgy blanks?

What you have already attempted should work (or at the very least give you some more meaningful feedback errors).

Maybe try burning an image of an older Ubuntu version to see if that works any better?

Try the last version, Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon from a mirror near you

Can you help with this problem?
