internet connection not working after upgrade

Asked by Muhammad bin Rashid

Hi, I just upgraded to hardy from gutsy and since have not been able to connect to the internet. The network manager is not reading anything under any of the tabs. If it has to do with anything, the computer has an error during boot and ends up in the grub menu. Ubuntu (original kernel) is the only option that allows for the boot. Also an error message shows up after booting and entering username and password, with the following: "Internal Error:" "Failed to Instalize HAL!". I have a wired ethernet connection with verizon dsl and a westell versalink 327W router/modem. The internet connection worked fine since start up before the upgrade. Please help, as I am quite new to using linux and ubuntu. If any more info. is needed, please ask.

Presumably then you are connected to the internet from another machine to post this?
Or do you have a dual boot into an operating system with Internet connectivity on the same machine?

Did you perform the upgrade from a CD or directly over the internet?

Is your modem connected via your ethernet card or a USB port (It sounds like Ethernet, just want to make sure).

Do you have an Ubuntu Hardy CD with you?

1. I have a dual boot into windows xp with internet connectivity on the same machine.
2. I performed the upgrade to hardy thru the internet directly
3. Ethernet conncection
4. I do have a hardy cd, but it doesn't seem to work on this particular computer as it freezes on startup.

Can you open a terminal window (Applications, Accessories menu) and post the results of the following command here...

lspci

Also, in case a package downloaded but failed to install it's worth running

sudo dpkg --configure -a

And, can you check in synaptic if there are any broken packages (shows in status bar at bottom of synaptic window)
sudo synaptic
