Make Ubuntu look like this...

Asked by Nate

Okay, so I'm trying to make my Ubuntu look like a mac, sorta. I like a lot of the features that MAC OS X likes, but I got Ubuntu for a reason. I just would like to have the 'glossy' look, a dock, and a cool black theme.

Here is a link to a video on YouTube showing more or less, exactly what I would like:

Any ideas? Also, I would like to keep my desktop cube function, but I don't know how to make a skydome background, or where to get them. Does anyone know how to do that?

Having both the skydome for the cube and the MAC glossy, black, and dock functions would be absolutely amazing. If you know how to make this happen, or you have your own tricked out theme that you like, just post back.

Cheers,

Nate

you could try the Ubuntu Community Forums for more exposure and a higher chance of someone giving you a fast and complete answer.

http://ubuntuforums.org/

the absolute beginners talk forum is high volume, you might be able to get a fast answer there, if not look through the subforums . a search may result in the answer already posted.

The forums would be a good place to find out if anyone knows the specifics of the theme - especially the monthly desktop thread in the community chat subforum.

You might also browse www.gnome-look.org for more themes.

As for th effects, you already have them. You just need to turn them on and make sure you have a graphics card that supports 3d effects and the proper driver installed. If you have a supported nvidia or ATI or intell graphics card, check the system - admin - hardware drivers and see if there is a check box for enabling the proprietary driver. Once you do that and reboot open system - prefs - appearance and click the visual effects tab and check extra. You might also want to install the compiz setting manager so you can tweak everything. Open add/remove and search for "compiz". There should be a package called "advanced desktop effects settings". Check and apply. It's under system-prefs.

OK! here it goes

To install compiz fusion

you need to have extra repositories enabled..
To enable all the software repositories do ref this link..

http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources

after getting all the required repositories enabled

Type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)

sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

This will add an entry to your System > Preferences menu listed as “Advanced Desktop Effects Settings”.

Make sure that you have “extra effects” turned on by navigating to System > Preferences > Appearance, selecting the Visual Effects tab, and selecting Custom at the bottom. Clicking the Preferences button will also launch the Compiz Config Settings Manager.
and below are the most used short cuts:
SUPER+SHIFT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = draw fire
SUPER+SHIFT+C = clear fire
CTRL+ALT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+LEFT ARROW = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+DOWN ARROW = flat desktop
SHIFT+ALT+UP=initiate window picker
CTRL+ALT+DOWN=unfold cube
ALT+TAB=window switch
SUPER+TAB=flip switcher or ring switcher depending on which is enabled.
ALT+F7=initiate 'move windows'
SHIFT+F9=water effect
SHIFT+F10=slow animations
CTRL+ALT+D=show desktop

For Grouping and Tabbing:
SUPER+S=Select Single Window
SUPER+T=Tab Group
SUPER+Left=Change Left Tab
SUPER+Right=Change Right Tab
SUPER+G=Group Windows
SUPER+U=Ungroup Windows
SUPER+R=Remove Group Window
SUPER+C=Close Group
SUPER+X=Ignore Group
hold the super button then select the windows you want to group and then hit super+g

also You can add new shortcuts.. all that you have to do is just you can select one of the plugin(double click on it) and in actions tab of the plugin, under bindings you can change the shortcuts. You can even add a screen edge as a binding so that when you move your mouse cursor to screen edge(say top left) compiz will execute the particular action. It goes really nice with expo plugin. have a great time with compiz fusion!
(the one with windows logo on it (in some keyboards along with windows logo "start" is printed)
This is the super key..

Next up transparent cube

For the transparent cube Go to System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings, or run ccsm from the terminal. This is the Settings Manager for Compiz-Fusion.

Find the Desktop Cube option under the Desktop category and click it. Make sure it's enabled (look on the very left for a checkbox) Go over to the Transparent Cube tab, and change the opacity of the cube during rotation.

Now you have a transparent cube. However, your caps are probably that hideous mustard yellow colour, and you probably don't want that. Head over to the Appearance tab, and change the Cube Colour option to black, or whatever else works for you.
