will not install! dell dimension 4700 edgy 6.10
hi
i'm haveing a problem installing edgy 6.10 i386 offen the alternate install cd .
i have a dell dimension dim 4700 pen.4 3.40ghz , one sata drive , 2 cd-drives that are ide.
if i boot offen the live cd edgy runs but i don't think it see's my sata hard drive but it runs.
when i try to install edgy from the alternate install cd the main screen comes up and i click on the first choice and it starts this is what it puts on the screen:
[17179573.608000] ata2:disabling port
[17179573.632000] usb 3-1.1: can't set config#1, error -71
[17179573.
[17179573.
[17179573.
[17179573.
start system log daemon: syslogd, klogd
_
after it puts all that on the screen it just sits there at a blinking curser , does anyone have any ideas?
i have installed edgy 6.10 numerious times on a couple dells and haven't had any problem before.
my cd's are set :
controller=parallel ata
port=pata-0
i don't have a controler card for the sata hard drive, it is built into the mother bord i beleve.
the chip set is intel 915g but i could be wrong i'm not sure how to check for the chip set.

I believe some systems have BIOS settings regarding the mode of the SATA drive or controller. I would like at that and try adjusting the value there. You could also run an update manager when using the Live CD to update packages and see if it is then able to see your SATA hard drive.

Also, head to dell.com and grab your latest BIOS. Flash to the newest BIOS and then double check the settings for your hard drive(s). This has fixed it this issue with some others. Also go ahead and grab any other updates Dell has to offer (specially for the Intel 915g chip set) -- I really bet this will fix your problem.

ok i changed the sata settings did nothing realy changed some of the numbers is all even disabled nic still no go it will boot the live cd but very slowly system.
it is reading my sata drive using the live cd with my normal bios settings <system> <administration> <gnome partition editor> my sata drive comes up perfectly so it isn't my sata drive so i will check my chips and see if there is an upgrade for them. is there any way to check the chip # from the live cd ? so i can be sure?

The following programs should give you the necessary information on the hardware:
lspci (lspci --vv)
lshal
dmidecode
Have you tried with booting without acpi and acpi?

i'm doing this with the live cd
ishal = is 144 udi long and it scroles and i can't cut and copy it all, terminal doesn't keep it all so i can't scroll back. i copyed and pasted what i could at the end.
dmidecode= tells me# dmidecode 2.8
/dev/mem: Permission denied
i'm not sure how to boot with out acpi but i will try
lspci= is below

When does it tell you 'no such file or directory'? Usually this message points to a wrong command.

it was telling me that in update manager when it asked you if you wanted to up grade after a couple trys it installed dapper with only one problem open office, i couldn't get grub strightened out probly because i didn't have a dapper disk, i was using 5.10 and edgy live disk to try to fix grub. i have ordered a 6.06.1 dapper disk should be here next friday also have down loaded the cd from the internet haven't tried it yet, do you think upgrading from 6.06.1 dapper to edgy,do you will work, if i upgrade want it install diffrent thing than is on the install cd or maybe a kernel ver has been changed and fix my original problem ?

ok the disk i down loaded worked i rescued grub so now i have dapper 6.06.1 i think ?
what do you think try up grading to edgy ? or not ?
why would the live edgy cd run and the alternate cd won't?
maybe the live cd will install but it doesn't give you the choice of where to put grub hum

original problem wasn't solved
butttttt! the information i had on the live cd was wrong it will let you put grub where you want it, last screen on the live cd lets you do this step 6, you can put grub on the root partion .
so the alternate cd won't install but the live cd will shouldn't they both have the same information ? they came as a set. edgy is running everything is fine. thanks for listening

Here is a simple lesson from my experience last weekend. I spend two days also trying to figure out why Ubuntu 7.10 desk top would not install. After numerous down loading of the ISO and then hashing them and after 10 burnt CD's later, it turns out to be a bad batch of CD's. Why I didn't suspect this earlier on? The files did show how they were suppose to in a number of burns and they looked good. Only after hashing the ISO did i suspect the CD quality could be bad. I have now burnt it onto better quality CD and bingo. it works.
