Ubuntu loaded on IBM thinkPad won't boot

Asked by Frans

IBM ThinkPad R40e. I have formated the hard drive, removed windows, Loaded Ubuntu 7.10.
Everything seems to have gone ok, but I can't get it to boot up.
I'm not much of a computer fundi, so please be specific in instructions.
Thank you.

Could you be more specific with what happens when you try to boot up? Are there any messages on the screen?

From Start I can use F1 (IBM BIOS setup utility)
and "Blue Access IBM" (Access IBM Predesk Area),
Otherwise it comes up with;

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB Loading please wait.....
Error 18

Thanks to those who replied.
I solved the problem by reading Question 31179 by LouiseR.
Though it did take 3 loadings and a lot of reading. Why it actually did take I'm still not sure, question of try and try again!
I now feel I think I now somthing of the 'A' in the alphabet of loading.
