Wireless Connection Indicator Disappeared

Asked by Tory

Using Ubuntu 8.04 updated. Accidentally deleted the "spread sheet like" wireless connection indicator icon (by default next to the date in the upper bar).

Can not seem to find this program or indicator anywhere.

It is NOT the network icon under the system menu.

It is NOT the network monitor under the "add to panel"

The only way I have ever been able to get this back was to do a total reinstall.... which is just to much..aggh!

Thanks for any ideas....

I think you are referring to the nm-applet. You can try to run nm-applet from a terminal window and see if that gives you the indicator you are looking for.
Use the command:
$ nm-applet &

If that's indeed what you are looking for, the easiest way to get it back is to reinstall the package that brings nm-applet.

$ sudo apt-get purge network-manager-gnome
$ sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome

Then log-out and log-in again.

Albert, you hit the description on the head... its the nm-applet

I followed your suggestions; in all cases I got this response:

Could not open location 'file:///home/zz/$%20sudo%20apt-get%20install%20network-manager-gnome'

So I am not sure if I can use synaptics or add-remove to find this program?

Tory,

the commands I gave should just work if you type them in a terminal window (don't type the $, that is only meant as the prompt you see in a terminal).

You can also use synaptics to do it. Just make sure you use "Mark for Complete Removal" to remove network-manager-gnome.

Good luck,
Albert

By accident - have it solved... there is something called: NOTIFICATION AREA as an add on to the menu bar. Once that is added, then the wireless icon appears, with some other icons- battery etc.

Thank you very much for ALL the help and patience... so much to discover.
