taurus,

The key combination is:

    Ctrl-Alt-Delete

Once the form pops up, then:

    Alt-S

also you could go to -->System/Preferences/Power Management....General (tab) and set it so when the power button is pressed it will shut down the computer.

What is the situation with ubuntu12.04?

When I tried to add a second screen to my laptop, via the VGA connector, I suddenly only had black screens and couldn't power down the computer any more. So I forcibly cut the power and since then, I can't access the account I was using then (it always reacts as if the password was given incorrectly, and changing the password via admin doesn't help). Luckily I was not logged in as admin at the moment and so could retrieve my files!
But I'd like not to have to do that again when I try out the VGA plug again since a software update of the graphics driver has been installed. So I'd like to power down the computer with just the keyboard.
CTRL-ALT-DEL only gets me to the logout screen.
