I am trying to instal Ubuntu on a dell inspiron 1505

Asked by eoalvarez

I created a boot disk using the 64 bit mirror, however, I get a error message that says

This kernel requires an x86-64 cpu, but only detected an i686 CPU.
Please use appropriate kernel

Hello,

You have downloaded a 64bit version of Ubuntu but your CPU is 32bit. Install Ubuntu with a 32bit CD/DVD.

Hello

yes +1 christophe

i686 means 32 bit

(To check the width of your cpu give the following command in the live CD (in a terminal)

sudo lshw -C cpu)

Download the 32 bit version from

http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.
