install .tar.gz packages

hey
I have several packages here, those are .tar.gz packages, for instance, some divx codecs for Linux, and the lates version of Firefox. I already did the sudo apt-get install firefox, and all that, but it downloads me the version 1.5 of Firefox.
so now I downloaded this one, the 2.0, but I don't know how to install it, I've searched in a lot of forums, but I can't seem to find an answer
I'd need some help here. It's really appreciated!
ps: I'm using Kubuntu Dapper, if that helps.

Hello !

Just to be a bit more general (for your personal knowledge, as what Leo said is the perfect answer to your question), .tar.gz is just a kind of compressed archive (like a .zip in Windows world) ... It can be extracted using command line "tar xvzf file_name" or any graphical archiving tool.

It is often used for sources packages, that you'll have to manually build before using it.
