boot Ubuntu without login name & password (how to?), this is for people with I.D.

Asked by Chris Alger

I would like to start Ubuntu and not be prompted for a user name and password.... just have the machine go straight to the desktop (etc) when finished booting. No user name and no password required to be typed in. This is needed for the I.D. people that will often use the machine.

Assuming you are running Ubuntu 8.04.1 with GDM, go to System > Administration > Login Window

Then under the tab titled Security you should find options regarding automatic login of a certain user. This being said it may be better, from a security point of view to create a new user specifically for use of these individuals, leaving the main user account and the filesystem more secure.

Load the Gnome Administration utility,
click on System -> Administration -> Login Window
Change to the Security tab.
Enable the checkbox for Enable Automatic Login
Select your user account from the drop-down list of users.

Thanks - this worked. And yes, I took your advice about security.... although in this case a straight reinstall of the op system would not be too much trouble either....

It is just an extra line of defence, one more hurdle to get over, to gain access to your filesystem.
