Remove Ubuntu from my Windows Vista start up screen!

Asked by Hal Ethridge

None of the other answers seem to be for my problem! I don't have Ubuntu on my Windows Vista machine! I don't want it! I did try to use an exterior hard drive with Ubuntu installed on it but removed Ubuntu from the exterior hard drive since I did not like it! Now I have a "start up screen" that gives me a choice between Windows Vista and Ubuntu but I don't have Ubuntu, only windows! I want to get a start up screen that does not refer to Ubuntu! Does any one no how to do this without formating my hard drive and reinstalling Windows Vista?

I assume you want to remove Grub (the Linux boot loader) and restore Vista's own boot loader. Microsoft provides instructions on doing this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

When you purchase a Hewlett Packard Computer/Laptop, you do not receive a "Windows Vista Installation Disk"! You receive a capability to download a set of restore disks! These do not get you to any point where you can do any of the things you suggest! If I knew how to get a "Windows RE Command Prompt", where I could insert a ?.exe command, from there it would be easy. Any suggestions?

Hi Hal,

Although I've not used it a lot of people have had success with Super Grub Disk, a free utility for that exact situation. I got the info from the following thread:

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/721404.html

Look at the post from the user "User 159761" on the 15 April 2007. From the following page of the GD site at

http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/SuperGrubDiskPage.html#Main_Purposes_of_Super_Grub_Disk

The following seems to be a solution:

   1. boot your SGD floppy disk, USB disk or CD-ROM
   2. English Super Grub Disk
   3. Windows
   4. Fix Boot of Windows

Hope this helps,

All the best,

Félim
