Install Problem

Asked by cdsiebel

Total Newbie, no nothing so please bear with me.
Have installed 6.1 to an older HP and it has restarted on my computer, this is where I'm lost.
I am asked for my logon then password and then this line comes up:
chuck@home:~$

What the heck do I type after this?
Please help, I'm clueless.

Hi!

The line....

chuck@home:~$

is the terminal prompt. It indicates that you're logged in as 'chuck' on 'home' computer.
What you're probably looking for is the desktop environment - the graphic user interface that comes with Ubuntu (Gnome).
To launch Gnome, just type: startx

Good luck!

Typed in startx after chuck@home:~$ and it says command not found.
Am I doing it wrong?

Thanks in advance.
Chuck

Hello again!

You probably did a server install of Ubuntu - without the Gnome desktop. To install it, type:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop

Leo

I'm pretty sure I didn't downoad the whoe program, the disc is 450 instead of the 750MB it shoud be. I tried what you suggested and it din't work. I am downoading it again and I'll se if it works.
Thanks again,
Chuck

You're right, Chuck... you need to download the ISO again and reinstall.
Make it a 'default' install and just let me know if you need further assistance.

Best regards,

Leo
