ext3 file system failed

Asked by Doug

I have been trying to install 6.10 on my 250gb external hard drive as my internal one is out of space. I get through the loading process and the partitioning window sees both drives so I select the one I want and let it reformat so there are no problems and at 5% the install fails every time with the ext3 file system failed message. I am a first time linux user so I am not sure where to go from here. Thank you for your time.

Hi and thanks for trying to help me with my problem! I am trying to install ubuntu from the bootable cd, I restart the computer then select load/install ubuntu. Then I click on the install icon and the I get to the process I described above.

I am receiving two error messages.

1. (Most frequently) The ext3 file system creation in partition #1 of scsi3 (0,0,0) (sdb) failed.

2. (Received twice) The attempt to mount a file system with type ext3 in scsi3 (0,0,0), partition #1 (sdb) at "/" failed.

Thank You!

Just to make sure that it wasn't a problem with the drive I went out and got another external hard drive (Western Digital 80gb passport) and I am getting first error I listed above except instead of the creation being in partition #1 it is in partition #2.

Please let me know if there is anything I can try to get around this problem.

Thanks

When the error occurs can you run "dmesg" in a terminal and look near the bottom for errors relating to the device?

Is it a powered USB device?
Could the USB port be duff? (I had a recently problem with a USB device which showed intermittent problems resolved by adding a PCI USB card :( )
Could the CD be duff? Have you done a media test on it? (there is a media test option when you boot the CD)

i doubt all those, external Hard drives are often difficult as some things see them as usb sticks instead of hard drives,

all the help i can provide atm. sorry :(

Sam, an external mass storage device is seen as a SCSI disk, whether it is a USB flash device or a hard disk.
