Ubuntu 8.04 mic input in XPS M1330

Asked by Albert

When updated to Ubuntu 8.04 from 7.10, integrated digital microphone works perfectly, but analog input mic is not working anymore. Soundcard is; Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02). Everything seems to be detected, but when analog input is selected on ALSA mixer, there's just no sound input. It was working perfectly in 7.10.

After installing Ubuntu 8.04 from scratch on the Dell XPS M1330 neither the internal microphone(s) nor the microphone input work.

Adding the line
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack
OR
options snd-hda-intel model=5stack
to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-utils and trying to modify the input source with the gnome mixer application does not solve the problem as expeced from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto, http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt and http://gentoo-wiki.com/Dell_XPS_M1330#Intel_Corporation_HD_Audio_Controller.

I have 2.6.24-18-generic kernel running and alsa-base 1.0.16-0ubuntu.

Confirming problem on Inspiron 1420n. Fixed sound by adding dell-3stack parameter to sound config, but still no external analog microphone. This worked fine a few kernels ago...

I also confirm the problem on my XPS M1330, under a fresh Hardy installation. The proposed change in /etc/modprobe.D/alsa-base does not solve the microphone problem.

I should also add that the "Digital Input Source" option does not appear in my gnome-volume-control, even though the latest linux-backport-modules-hardy-generic is installed (2.6.24.19.21). I'm using alsa-base 1.0.16-0ubuntu4.

FYI, the microphone is working under Vista, and I have made various tests under Ubuntu Hardy (e.g., audacity, skype).

I had the same problem and I have solved it completely removing the line
options snd-hda-intel model=
from /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
Now everything works: internal and external mic and speakers.
I have 2.6.24-19-generic kernel and alsa-base 1.0.16-0ubuntu4 on x86-64.

I can confirm that Bremens solution also worked for me on Jaunty 9.10. Many thanks.
