New Linux User

Asked by blodflekk

I am a VERY new user to linux, I have instelled today for the very first time, I have chosed ubuntu version 8.04.1 (64bit) and i have found that the ability to find and install drivers is alot harder than windows, I have a custom built pc with the following specs:
P35 intel chipset,
realtek 889A HD audio
nVidia 8600GT
Pioneer DVR-112D DVD/RW+/-
and
gigbit LAN

I was wondering if someone could tell me where I could find drivers/firmware for these and how to install them because I have read that the installation of applications and drivers can be quite difficult.

It will depend on what is and is not working already.

For example gigabit LAN is very common, and should be working already.

Drivers in Linux are generally made the community. If a particular piece of hardware is very common it should work. The intel chipset, the audio device, the dvr drive and the gigabit Lan all should work by default. NVidia graphics cards require some work, here is the ubuntu help page that can help you..

Hope that helps
