If you just wish to try ubuntu for a while and see how it is. Why don't you just put the CD in your CD/DVD player and reboot your computer. And Then When you see the ubuntu menu, choose Try without changing anything (or something like that).

After a couple seconds, you'll be under Ubuntu, if you have ethernet connection, you'll have internet already and you can surf the web using Firefox, or instant messenging, or whatever...

This will not change anything on your computer.

you are using microsoft virtual pc i suppose!

this software from microsoft have also created problems for me when i tried to install a virtual machine with ubuntu
and i used to get nowhere as i only found a garbage screen

and microsoft also say it only support microsoft operating system on its software

you could use vmware server as it is also free to use but doesn't give problem with ubuntu

http://www.vmware.com/products/server/

you would have to regester to get a key i order to use software but the registration is free
and process is nearly painfree

please be patient as installation might take take more than 20 min.

if you need to install virtualization software on linux then
install via synaptic
you would have more choice than vmware such as SUN xVM virtual box

Before I installed Ubuntu, I learned it in Virtualbox. It installed with no problems - even provided guest additions. Everyone seems to have their personal preferences when it comes to virtual machines. I feel Vbox is a bit more robust than VMware.....let the virtual wars will continue......
