No hardware drivers installed

Asked by Aone

I have installed the unbuntu 8.04 successfully. previously, i used to run other linux versions like opensuse concurrently with windows xp.this time around when i installed the ubuntu 8.04, i decided to completey remove windows xp. but then after a successful installation, there is no hardware driver installed. when i run the hardware test, the system can detect the sound cards, video driver and even the network card. but then i dont know how to get them to be installed since i cant even browse the internet in the fitst place (no ethernet driver). does this mean that maybe i should install windows first then ubuntu thereafter? but then my only wish is to run only one OS on my pc.

so please, anyone who could help me, i would really appreciate.

Aone

Do you have the desktop "live CD" version of Ubuntu 8.04LTS?

The live CD should boot from the CD drive and allow you to run the operating system to make sure that your hardware is generally supported.
If you can detect the network card as you say, you should be able to get through to the internet.

Can you post the results of the following command in a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories)

ifconfig

sorry there was a typho error somewhere.

the line ....."the system can detect the sound cards, video driver and even the network card. but then i dont know how to get them to be installed since i cant even browse the internet in the fitst place (no ethernet driver)."

is supposed to be like: ........."the system can NOT detect the sound cards, video driver and even the network card. but then i dont know how to get them to be installed since i cant even browse the internet in the fitst place (no ethernet driver)."

I use an ASrock motherboard of these specifications: Intel 845GV ,845GV-M ,P4i45GV R5.0. The other thing which i think is worthwhile to note is that during the installation of ubuntu 8.04 (boot-up process), a kernel-like mode showed (busyBox) saying something like initframs or so. I browsed over the net and found somewhere that to bypass the busyBox, i needed to edit the options. I replaced the 'quite splash' with 'all_generic_ide' and then i was able to boot up instantly. then thats where i faced the above-mentioned problems after completion of the installation process. ( ie no sound, no internet, bad graphics etc).

At this very moment, im running ubuntu 7.10 without any single problem, its running smooth. but as it is always the case, i was thinking i better use the current distribution( 8.04).

Any sort of help would be much appreciated and i would be very glad.

PS: a certain virus (actually a worm) destroyed all my data on Windows XP, and im NEVER going to use that OS again, not even on a dual mode with LInux!

You could work on getting 8.04 working but, if you are upgrading only to have the latest version, then I would suggest you wait until the end of October as a new version is being released then (Intrepid Ibex 8.10).
