Slow Graphics Hardy Heron

Hi i have an install of ubuntu 8.04 the hardy heron release. Everything seems fine. I have a few slight wireless card issues, i.e. b43 won't seem to enable. However i have the Broadcom STA driver to use if i nees to. I also have a wireless usb adapter ieee802.11g which gives me a good internet connection.
My problem seems to be a get very slow graphics. Balazar the game you can download with synaptic package manager wotks so slowly that i can't use it. I can't get 3d chess to work even with the correct downloads (i think) also oolite a synaptic game runs to slowly to use. Do i have the correct drivers? Are they working?

I have run glxgears on the terminal and got a fps of about 920. Is this about right?
