Windows Backup

Asked by NakiMum

Before installing Ubuntu & Edubuntu I did a backup - it's in .NBF format. How do I load data onto ubuntu. My previous OS was Vista home basics. 2 guesses why I went over to Ubuntu - harddrive crashed 4 times in 1 year! Acer just says that it's a dud drive they keep replacing. Please help me.

What program did you use to back up the files? I have never heard of .NBF files.

Sorry, it was NTI (New Tech Information) or something like that. I think it's because I used the 'backup' funtion instead of just making a data disc like I've always done in the past

Are you able to still boot in to Windows or have you removed the partition completely?

Can't boot into Windows. I do have a factory default cd that I had to write myself, but it doesn't work at all. Thanks for being so patient

I am not sure what programs in Ubuntu will be able to open a Windows backup. I will try to do some research for you in the morning. You may end up having to install Vista in a Virtual Machine and restore the files using that... but I will see if a FOSS application can open the format (I will also try to check what the file format is to be sure).

Don't worry I am always patient.

Have you found a solution to this yet? Now I've got the problem that my built-in webcam doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

I got time to complete my research on the NTI files...

Those appear to be custom file type and the program is Windows only. It would be a long shot, but you could try loading the backup software (assuming you have the install media and it was not pre-packaged) in WINE. Then you might be able to open those backups.

If not you may need to re-install Windows to get your restore done.

I personally would suggest using a USB stick or external HD to copy all your important data file too before moving to a new OS. Then you simply copy them off the USB stick or external HD to your new OS.

For your webcam can you make a new question? When you do please post the output of an

lspci

Thanks

Thanks for the time you spent sorting this out. I'll follow your advice. The default cd I have of Windows doesn't load automatically and everytime I load it I can't open it with any applications in Ubuntu. Would it still work if I bought a new windows disc and loaded it? Thank you so much for spending so much time on this. I will open a new question for the webcam. You've been a star.

The problem is that the backup utility you used likely came with the computer as a third-party application and not part of Windows. You would need Windows + that application. There may be a recovery partition or a recovery disk that came with your computer that would allow you to reinstall both and put your data in a usable format.

This is the website I found with the product -- http://www.ntius.com/

You may be able to call them and ask if there is a way to use that data without re installation of the data, but my guess would be they will say no.

Good luck; I am sorry you have had issues.

Thanks a bunch for all you've come up with. The website does have a trial that'll I'll download and run on the kids desktop computer, it's still got windows xp.
The issues I've got isn't ubuntu, this all started because I'd got fed up with vista for always crashing, freezing and just being a royal pain in the you-know-where.
I absolutely LOVE ubuntu and have just downloaded the edubuntu for my kids for their computer. But this time I'll back up the data like I've always done - making a data dvd/cd!
Anyway, thanks for everything you've been great!. Keep well and hopefully I'll come right.

You are amazing! No-one else could help me like you. Half of them didn't
even know about NTI. All they wanted to do is clone my harddrive in
order to get the data off and that would've cost heaps, we just don't
have that kind of money laying around, especially to spend on the laptop
that has cost double it's purchase price with all the cloning we had to
do.
Keep up the great work.

Kind regards
Another Ubuntu user and believer!

Hi there, me again!! You should get a medal for helping me. I've downloaded a trial version onto a cd and installed it onto the kids' computer. And voila, I'm restoring my files as we speak. Thank you, thank you and a thousand times THANK YOU. You've been a life saver. All my kids photos are on the 2 discs. If I could make a virtual medal to give I would, but please accept my deepest and most sincere gratitude for what you have meant to me. My normal computer-helper is in South Africa and unable to help me.

Your thanks is all the reward I could ask for; helping people and seeing them happy is the greatest reward (other than my own kids)
