Unable to connect to the internet

Asked by ion

Hi,

I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 and I cannot connect to the internet (it is a wired connection). I am using a Dell Inspiron E1505; the Ethernet connection seems to be working fine. I tried the next commands for which I got:

ion@ion:/etc/network$ ifconfig

What do you mean by "I cannot connect to the internet"? Your browser doesn't show you pages on the internet? What's the error message? You can't receive e-Mails with your client? What's the error message?
Have you tried pinging some hosts on the net? How did you determine that ethernet is working (it looks like it from the ifconfig command, but have you tried connecting to some host in the network)? How do you usually connect to the Internet?

I cannot ping google.com the result is network host unreachable. I also tried to ping google's ip and the result is the same. I have a dual boot with windows xp and this is my typical connection which does not require any special settings.

Try to ping to some known IP address instead of a domain name. If that works, possibly you have not configured the nameserver on your machine.

Can you help with this problem?
