avg files won't open to allow the installation

What is the exact error message you see, and what actions do you take to see it? I suspece that the error is a permissions error. When you download an executable file from the internet, you may need to give it executable permissions before you can run it. For example, if I download the file "foobar" in to /tmp, I would need to run:

chmod +x /tmp/foobar

To install it, I would then need to run:

sudo /tmp/foobar

You need to install the .deb version of http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afl

But please don't forget the free antivirus clamav

Using System → Administration → Software sources [Ubuntu software] please enable the Universe the repository.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install clamav clamtk

when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter
