Hardy printing dialog or app hangs when attempting to print but can print test page from Print Configuration dialog

Printing working fine until a few days ago (perhaps before recent cupsys updates?). Now I can print a test page from System|Administration| Printing, printing configuration dialog, but when I try to print from any application the app or printer dialog hangs. For example:
->Firefox- select print then app hangs with no dialog presented.
->Inkscape- select print then app hangs with no dialog.
->Gimp- select print, dialog appears but does no get painted.
There is no CPU utilisation when hung.
Restarting CUPSYS has no effect.
The printer is a EPSON iP1000.
Running Hardy with all patches.

But dialog does work from Thunderbird. So seems just to affect certain apps...

and tried setting default printer to PDF but exhibits same problem.

Upgraded to 8.10 and problem solved. It asked whether I wanted to replace 2 conf file related to cupsys in the process and I accepted. Whether this is related I don't know, but I had never altered these files on hardy (from a clean install).
