Hi

I've a sound card but it doesn't work. I followed the instructions in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting.

Step 1: Is the system recognizing your sound card?
Command: aplay -l

root@linux-desktop:~# aplay -l

Step 2: Do you have the sound modules installed?

Step 3: Is the sound card physically installed and recognized by your hardware?

But I can't find a label called "Audio device". Could this be the problem? Thanks a lot.

Hi,

If you have a CD somewhere, perhaps you may want to try the newest version of Ubuntu (8.10) as a live CD. Recent versions generally include more / better drivers.

Maybe you soundcard output volume is set to zero or even muted.
Sometimes GUI-mixer doesn't show this correctly. So, try using 'alsamixer' from the console to check volumes and set them right.
To get help on 'alsamixer' run:
man alsamixer
(press 'q' to quit documentation showing program)
To run 'alsamixer' run :) :
alsamixer

P.S. And try googling for 'SBLive Ubuntu' - there are plenty known issues and solutions described on the web. I don't have SBLive myself, so it'd be faster to go and check each one by yourself. Never the less, feel free to provide more information on your progress, we are willing to help you.

There is another place to dig - system sound properties. Hit System->Preferences->Sound menu item. Write down you current configuration (to be able to return everything back if you'll need it later :) ) and then try to change settings and test audio playback, maybe it'll help.

Oh, you can also try using 'alsaconf' utility. Just run from the console:
sudo alsaconf

More detailed:
--------
To run alsaconf to setup your sound, open a terminal window, type the command sudo alsaconf it will prompt you for your password give the password you use to log in.

After alsaconf runs you will want to run alsamixer just type the name, you don't need sudo with that command. Make sure the volume is turned up. To navigate use your arrow keys left or right, to unmute use the m key, to exit press the Esc key. To exit the terminal window just type exit and hit enter.

Hi. I think you have a some kind of conflict between your motherboard's embedded card (Intel) and the SLive!, then, you have two choices:
1- Disable your motherboard's sound card at the CMOS setup
2- Manually remove the auto detection at System->Preferences->Sound and select the card you wish to ear
Hope this help, let me know.

Hi Ariel

How can I reach the CMOS setup?

I changed the entries in System > Preferences > Sound. But without success.

Thanks

Hmmm, have you tried System->Preferences->Sound menu ?
Is your SBLive listed there ? No combination of settings there lets your hear a testing sound from none of the outputs ?
What output of SBLive are you trying to use ? Speaker, LineOut, Digital, etc. ?

I have System > Preferences > Sound, but not System > Preferences > Sound menu.

There the default mixer track is SBLive. SBLive is only listed there.

I'll get the sound of videos and nothing else.

Thanks

Have a look here:
https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/wiki/wikka.php?wakka=TroubleShooting

For example, this two:
 7) Check that the sound card mixer channels are unmuted
If your card's driver is installed and its name appears in /proc/asound/cards, and you still hear no sound, the most likely cause is that you haven't unmuted the right mixer channels and set their volume to nonzero. Note that ALSA sort of misnomes the channels of the mixers of many cards. Use alsamixer to play around with the settings of the most obvious sounding channels. There are often descriptions of what the channels are in the ((AlsaDrivers)) section about specific sound cards. Usually, make sure that the at least the Master and PCM (and Wave or Headphone if present) channels are unmuted and have non zero volume. For laptop users, try toggling the External Amplifier switch.

 8) The main channels are unmuted and non zero volume, but not sound
Many cards can do both analog and digital (labeled SPDIF/IEC958) output, but some cannot do both at the same time. If you hear no sound, it may be because the card is in analog mode and you have digital speakers or viceversa. To determine which mixer channels controls the switch between analog and digital for your card look at the AlsaDrivers page for your card. Often this is called Analog/Digital Output Jack. If present, mute/unmute it to switch between digital and analog sound output.

About using alsamixer to do this Daniel49 wrote (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/sound-blaster-audigy-2-zs-337513/):
---------
once you open alsamixer from the command line you will see a mixer panel.

there will be several slider bars and in between the slider bars some little boxes with sideways looking mm in it.
those little boxes with mm in them are switches to turn features on and off.
By using your arrow key -> you can move over to the proper switch to turn it on.

if its black with mm in it then it is presently turned off it will turn green when it is on.
you turn it on by moving cursor over till you are on it then type M
You will need to find the switch for analog/digital.
because if you are wired to analog and its set to digital you will get no sound.

Don't be fooled into thinking you are seeing all the switches keep pressing your arrow key to keep moving over till you find the analog switch.

Can you upload screenshots of your System->Preferences->Sound pages ? Or describe what you have there in more details.

And what do you mean by "I'll get the sound of videos and nothing else." ?
Your sound is working when you watch videos ?

Hi Bulat

I've a file /proc/asound/cards. But this file is empty.

Regarding alsamixer: All little boxes contains "00" and the boxes are green. And where can I find the switch for analog / digital?

Ariel Cabral has already given you the answer.

Go into your BIOS and disable the motherboard onboard sound device. Your motherboard handbook will tell you what to do.
Generally you have to press "Esc" or "F2" at bootup to get to your BIOS screen.

Hi Andre

Thanks for your hint.

Regarding BIOS I've two Audio devices:
- Compaq Audio device
- Creative Labs Audio device

I disabled both of them - but without success. The sound doesn't work.

And Ariel told me to activate the CMOS setup. This is not the same as the BIOS setup.

Hi Peter,
If you disable both you don't have sound. Disable just one (the Compaq Audio device) and let the other (Creative Labs) active and save the changes (see your motherboard manual).
The CMOS setup is the same as the BIOS setup.
Hope this help, let me know.

Hi Ariel

Thanks for your hint. Tomorrow I'm going to try it. Maybe it works *lll.

And CMOS and BIOS:
- CMOS means Complementary metal–oxide–semiconducto. It's is a major class of integrated circuits.
- BIOS: In computing, BIOS is an acronym that stands for Basic Input/Output System.

I guess, this is not the same. Am I mistaken?

Ok peter, try and please let me know.
By the way, your definitions are ok, but the complete name (of this stuff) is BIOS CMOS Setup (known as BIOS setup or CMOS setup in short) because it is a program (Setup) resident in your motherboard ROM (non-volatile memory) which allow to modify data in a memory which is part of the BIOS (parameters of the BIOS) stored in volatile memory (build with CMOS circuits) and battery powered.
This parameters stores the particular (low level) configuration of your computer (memory size, hard disks types, date and time, enable or disable an embedded sound card and many other things) that the BIOS must know before the operating system starts.
Hope this help.
