Email gmx.net > Download Office document > Error

Asked by peter

Hi

I've a question and I would be glad if you have an answer.

In gmx.net I'll download a document. In the Opening dialog I choose "Open with" (Openoffice.org Calc). And then I'll get the following Error:

/tmp/document.xls could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

The help function is installed. Do you have an idea how this problem can resolved? Thanks.
Peter

Peter,

please try this Workaround:
In gmx.net do not select "open-With" but first select "Download" .. save the file on a know location.
Start OpenOffice.Org-Calc, and select <Ctrl-O> (Open file)... browse to the location where your file was stored; select the file en choose <Open>

Is Calc opening the file now?

Hi Menting

Thanks!

I would prevent to save the file. It works, if I save the file. But I like to open it immediately.

Peter,

So, if you act as this:
1. save the file
2. start OpenOffice.Org
3. Open the file
then everything is going well...
We now know that OpenOffice.org can open the file, so the installation of OpenOffice.Org seems OK.

Second try:
(Hope you still have the downloaded file somewhere...; see whether OOO-Calc can open file external managed:)

1. start Thunar-File-Manager
2. browse to the saved file
3. Right-click on the saved file, choose
4. Open-with OpenOffice.Org-Calc

And report here if that goes well too...

How is it going with a file
you upload and sended to yourself?

Hy Menting

It works perfect if I save the file. No problem.

But what can I do, to prevent to save the file? Because Open is mutch faster than save, locate and open.

Thanks.

Peter,

if you choose "Open" then the file is saved as
  /tmp/<FileName>
and opened from that location,
on reboot, the directory /tmp/ is emptied...True,
right-click and "open" is faster,
but please provide us more information (answer all my previous questions) so we can try to locate the exact problem...

Hy Menting

Thanks. I guess, the problem is described clearly.

And to open the file via Filemanager is mentioned too - it's not a problem.

Looking at the info i have till now,
i suggest that you do this 2 things:

Re-Install OpenOffice.Org:
<Applications> <System> <Synaptic Manager>
<Reload information> (first button)
When ready, on the right side go to OpenOffice.Org
Select, and choose Reinstall
<Apply>

Change-Preference:
With Thunar-FileManager go to an (ANY) spreadsheet: .XLS
RIGHT-click on it, choose "Open-With"
check "always open with this program"
and select OpenOffice.Org-CALC
<OK>

After these actions, reboot and retry from gmx.net (i'm not familiar with that program)
if it works now.

Hi Menting

Thanks for your hint.

But it doesn't depend on OpenOffice.org. I can live with this problem because it's not a real problem. Thanks.
