AR2413 chipset not working in Ubuntu

Asked by Wardie

I am advised that I should select System ▸ Administration ▸ Network to connect to available wireless networks. Under administration, I don't have the 'Network' option. I am able to connect via a cable to the router. Please help. Thanks. Chris.

Hi,

Please follow my advice here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/56736

After that, you should be able to see your wireless network using NetworkManager.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I have followed the advice you have given to Komakec but it has not
helped. I appended the file and saved the changes. I then re-booted and
looked for network manager under system>administration. I still do not
have the 'Network' option.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi,

Please look at this link for instructions on how to use Networkmanager in Ubuntu. You are using Ubuntu, not Kubuntu right?

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkManager0.7

So NetworkManager is a small icon/applet in the top right corner of your screen that you can right-click on, if using Ubuntu. After right-clicking the icon, you can "Edit connections" and choose Wireless to configure your connection.

If you cannot see Networkmanager as an icon in the top right corner of the screen, run the following command to manually start up the "icon":

nm-applet --sm-disable

The following site shows a nice screenshot of the NetworkManager applet in the system tray:

http://projects.gnome.org/NetworkManager/

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Mark

Hi mark,

I have aginn followed your instruction and have run the command. The
output is as follows:

wardie@Woodbine:~$ nm-applet --sm-disable

** (nm-applet:21082): WARNING **: <WARN>
applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the
NetworkManagerUserSettings service as it is already taken. Return: 3

(nm-applet:21082): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion
`G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
wardie@Woodbine:~$

Unfortunately, I do not understand this.

Please advise,

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi,

I think the error message means that the NetworkManager service applet is already started. You should already have access to the NetworkManager icon in the top right corner of your screen.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Please find attached a screen shot of my setup. Unfortunately, I am not
able to see the Network manager Icon. I hope that this is not the end of
the road??

Please advise,

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your reply. Being a novice to Ubuntu/linux, I am now becoming
confused. I am not sure what I should be doing here. I will persevere
and try and find something which looks like my problem. This may take
some time. If I may, I will get back to you in due course unless you are
able to point me directly to the panacea?

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi,

The problem now is that your NetworkManager applet is not appearing in the top right corner of your screen, but it should appear there. Unless you are using something else than Ubuntu... This is probably an Ubuntu bug, which I explained before.

Please try the following two workaround procedures below in order to try to make the NetworkManager icon reappear in the top right corner of your screen. The links below should hopefully be your "panacea"/solution, as I wrote before.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/249404/comments/16
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/249404/comments/13

I'm afraid I cannot be clearer than that.

Mark

I am connecting to a WPA encrypted router so i opted not to set up wireless at instal; however now I cannot even get a list of avalible AP's and the option Wireless Connection is greyed out. I know it works as i was able to connect on 9.04, but now it wont work on 8.10. By the way the system is a PS3 (aka a 64 bit powerpc). I would appreciate any help that you could give me. Thank you so much!
